UP Tacloban Media Students Launch Heat Stroke Awareness Campaign for Senior Citizens in Sta. Fe, Leyte

30 May 2024

Students of the Media 197 (Special Topics: Health Communication) class of the BA Communication Arts program of UP Tacloban’s Division of Humanities conducted a health communication campaign titled “Heat Stroke Perdiha, Kapaso Andaman ‘Ta!” for senior citizens of Brgy. Zone 1 Poblacion, Sta. Fe, Leyte on 25 May 2024.

Around 50 senior citizens attended the campaign, which featured a lecture-demonstration by Mr. Benedicto M. Gantala, Jr., a resource person from the Philippine Red Cross-Leyte Chapter, on the nature, severity, risk factors, and management of heat stroke. The highlight of the talk was a demonstration of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) as part of first aid measures for individuals affected by heat stroke.

Barangay Chairman, Hon. Charlito Lago, delivered his opening remarks

The health campaign sought to increase knowledge about heat stroke and prevention measures among senior citizens, who are more at risk of heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps. It was launched with the BEAT the Heat! jingle, a catchy tune composed and translated into a music video by the Media 197 students themselves and which they posted on social media.

An integrative class activity, this Media 197 health campaign was conducted in collaboration with the UP Tacloban Ugnayan ng Pahinungod and with support from Love Radio Tacloban, Magik FM Radio Tacloban, and Dream Radio Tacloban.
