Regional Sea Cucumber Roadshow held at UP Tacloban

Representatives of local government units, academic institutions, the aquaculture sector, and civil society organizations in Eastern Visayas gathered at UP Tacloban College on 25-26 July 2024 for the Regional Sea Cucumber Roadshow organized by the Guiuan Development Foundation, Inc. (GDFI) with funding from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) Sandfish Project. UP Tacloban as an institutional partner of GDFI co-hosted the event.

UP Tacloban Dean Patricia B. Arinto welcomed the participants during the opening program. GDFI Executive Director Professor Margarita de la Cruz gave an overview of the roadshow and Department of Science and Technology Regional Director John Glenn Ocaña presented the Sea Cucumber R&D Roadmap.

The two-day roadshow included talks on “Sea Cucumber Biology, Ecology, Fisheries, and Trade” by Mr. Cristan Campo of the Department of Agriculture’s National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), “Sandfish Project Overview” by Professor de la Cruz, “Sandfish Spawning and Hatchery Production” by Mr. David Cosmiano of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Guiuan Marine Fisheries Development Center, and “Ocean Nursery and Advance Nursery Rearing” by Ms. Racelle Rescordado of GDFI on Day 1, and talks on “Current Knowledge and Practices on Sandfish Grow-out Systems” and “Current Knowledge and Practices on Sandfish Post-harvest Technology” by Ms. Janine Villamor of GDFI, “Integrated Sea Ranching” by Professor de la Cruz, and “Sea Cucumber Management and Policies on Sea Cucumber Trade” by Ms. Nonita Cabacaba of NFRDI on Day 2.
 
The attendees also identified key issues and developed action plans for sea cucumber conservation and sustainable development in their provinces.
